Meet the Team, Maritza I. Ramirez

Maritza I. Ramirez, EXCEL! Academic Success Coach

Fun Facts about me:

  • I love reading books!

  • I occasionally do background acting for films.

  • I lived in Sweeden for 6 months during a study abroad semester.

About Me:

I am originally from Longmont, Colorado and I moved to Austin, Texas as a kid. I was raised by a single mother of five, who taught me the importance of education. I received two undergraduate degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, one in Human Development and Family Sciences and one in Mexican American Studies, making me the first in my family to receive a bachelor’s degree. During the pandemic, I moved to Southern California to explore my career options. I knew I wanted to work with students at the college level and this past November I was hired as the new Academic Success Coach. I am new to Merced and am excited to be so close to Yosemite and explore northern California.

What is my goal as an Academic Coach:

My goal is to support students in getting what they want out of their college experience. From my personal and professional experience, I know the importance and benefits of having a good mentor/coach and I want to be that resource for the students I work with.

What I wish I knew in college as an undergrad:

I wish I knew I didn’t have to go through this alone. As an undergraduate, I felt like I needed to be able to be successful on my own and that kept me from seeking help from resources I knew were available. It is okay to ask for help, and I wish I had done so more often. Also, GO TO OFFICE HOURS!

What would I be doing if I weren’t an EXCEL! Academic Coach:

If I weren’t working in higher education, I would be working on being a writer. I would also be giving acting a shot. I am glad that these are still things I can do in my free time.

What are my 3 personal success tips:

1. Pursue your curiosity. If you ever wonder what it would be like to try something, go for it! This is the time to explore, not only your academic and professional interests but also your personal interests. Join that dance organization, sign up for that volunteer opportunity, college has a lot to offer, and now is the time to take advantage of that!

2. Go to office hours! If I could go back and do my undergrad again, I would go to office hours a lot more often.

3. Learn from your experiences. It is important to take time and reflect on your experiences and learn from them. Things won’t always go your way, but it is in those experiences that you have the most opportunity for growth.
