Abel Hernandez, EXCEL! Program Academic Success Coach
Fun Facts about me:
- I am fluent in Spanish.
- I like going for long walks on my free time.
- I am a first-generation college graduate.
About Me: Greetings Bobcats! I am from Fresno, California, and I am proud to be a first-generation college graduate. I earned both my bachelor’s degree in Psychology and my master’s degree in Student Affairs and College Counseling from Fresno State. I am truly passionate about helping students succeed at every stage of their higher education journey. I have been with UC Merced for just over a year, and I am excited to be a part of the EXCEL! program. I look forward to working with each of you.
What is my goal as an Academic Coach: As an Academic Success Coach, my goal is to ensure that education is accessible and equitable for all students. Earning my college degree was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life, and I am passionate about helping UC Merced students achieve similar success in their academic journeys.
What I wish I knew in college as an undergrad: Get involved in everything! The faster you can explore your interests, the faster you can figure out what you love to do.
What would I be doing if I were not an EXCEL! Academic Coach: I have always been interested in education. If I were not an Academic Success Coach, I would be pursuing a PhD in Psychology or a high school math teacher.
What are my 3 personal success tips:
- Use all the resources available to you. There are a ton of resources available to you that can help you succeed academically and personally.
- Do not be afraid to ask questions! We were all new at something at some point in our lives. The fastest way to learn is by asking for help.
- Learn from your experiences. It is important to take time and reflect on your experiences and learn from them. Things will not always go your way, but it is in those experiences that you have the most opportunity for growth.
